Al Franken's Curious Accountability Demands

'BLANK'-EN FRANKEN

Does Stuart Really Believe He'll Get Away With This?

*** Lieberman Defends Coleman's Oversight Record ***

There are nervy, brazen and obnoxious people in this crazy world and then there is Al Franken, truly one of a kind. While he may not win November's senate election in Minnesota, this alleged comedian could easily score a top prize as the most shameless hypocrite on the campaign trail.

At this point, however, Franken himself may not be the biggest problem. For letting him get away with these dishonest antics, fingers ought to be pointing at the rest of us. After all, ol' Stuart Smalley's simply staying true to character.

As he dares to criticize Norm Coleman for his supposed lack of "accountability" while chairing a Senate oversight committee, can we really remain silent? Where was this zeal for ethics and morality when his employer, Air America Radio, was looting a children's charity to fund staff salaries?

From the Minneapolis Star-Tribune:

From 2003 to 2007, Coleman was chairman of the Senate's Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations (PSI). Coleman led several probes as chairman, including music pirating on the Internet, Pentagon travel abuses and abuses in the United Nations' oil-for-food program.

But Franken said Coleman held no hearings on waste and fraud during the war at "the bidding of the White House."

Coleman "let our country down. We paid a steep price. Now it falls to the people of Minnesota to hold him accountable," Franken said.

Coleman campaign officials responded that the PSI has uncovered more than $70 billion in payroll tax abuses, Medicare fraud and unpaid contractor taxes since Coleman joined the committee.

"Al Franken would rather have him doing things that were being done by other committees ... that were better equipped to handle this," said campaign spokesman Luke Friedrich.

And from KARE-TV 11, Franken parrots his party's talking points, with unintentionally funny results (perhaps he's a comedian after all):

Meanwhile, DFL Senate candidate Al Franken says Congress should not give the Bush administration a "blank check" as it considers a $700 billion plan to bail out the financial industry. Franken says any plan should include independent oversight by Congress.

He also says that taxpayers should get an equity stake in companies that are being bailed out. Like other Democrats in Congress, Franken says that CEOs of such companies should not receive excessive salaries. And the candidate is calling for a freeze of home foreclosures. Franken is challenging Senator Norm Coleman, a Minnesota Republican.

While he made greedy salary demands of a radio network that was using siphoned charity money to make payroll, where was the accountability? And isn't that "blank check" concept strangely reminiscent of his own Air America deal?

Where has Al Franken ever set the example that he would compel others to follow?

This factually- correct ad, created
by the Coleman campaign, ought to be required viewing for every Minnesota voter.

Are we really going to let Al Franken get away with this stunningly hypocritical campaign approach, or instead use the opportunity to shout from the rooftops that this guy is as dirty as they come?

  • With everything that is going on, does ANYONE really care what Al Franken does and says, at this point?

    Oh, I forgot. The VENDETTA....

    Carry on in mediocrity!

  • The folks in Minnesota certainly care.

Hopefully the ethically-challenged Franken will get a full time job with SNL after he loses the election and moves back to NYC.

Hey Al, don't let the door hit you on the way out.

  • The sickness of the political system is directly proportional to Al Franken's viability as a candidate for any public office. I'm sure I could prove this mathematically, but don't really have the time.

  • Coleman, who is seeking a second term in the Senate, is ahead of Franken, a TV comedy writer and longtime Democratic activist, by a statistically insignificant one percentage point, 48% to 47%, according to the latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of voters in the state.

    Go Al !

Hopefully Benson leaves the country after Franken wins to one of those 50 countries he has visited.

  • Thanks MOP.

Regardless of the outcome, Costa Rica does look very attractive. Their high speed internet connections could let me stay connected while enjoying the mountain breezes as I sip my cafe con leche in the San Jose mountains.

    You said: "Go Al !"

Be careful on what you wish for.
Franken just might lose and go to New York and end up as one of your neighbors. Then both of you could be permanently hardwired together into the Daily Kos's hypogean cesspools and rely on your constant regurgitation of methanethiol to inculcate others.

  • The reason why both candidates are so close, is that both are similarly awful, and miserable picks for the job.

What I'm saying is that I believe that most people understand that Franken's basically a nasty bastard personally, and are trying to vote their own interests, based on the issues.

Why continue to MAKE UP nonsense about Franken, including the tired old canard about Evan Cohen's Co-op City daycare flap that Franken was totally exonerated for, when there's so much about Franken (and Coleman) that's actually loathsome enough to revisit?

Franken is not a popular man. It should be a cakewalk to find someone willing to dish the dirt about something he's done that actually has some merit to the election itself.

  • I can’t believe there are people who are stupid enough to vote for someone with Al’s mind set and personality. Oh I forgot liberals are that way.

  • Franken is a spineless worm.

  • Franken has agreed (in his own ad) that he has gone too far.

Here is a link to some of Franken's more memorable quotes like:

Franken jokes about date rape. “Yeah, I screwed a girl who was vomiting once.” (“Al Franken Show,” 10.18.2006)

What a fantastic candidate for the U.S. Senate.

You were asked on the MDE thread you linked to
    ( http://tinyurl.com/3sybcz ),

"Do you have any more information on this? Was he telling a story about himself, or was it said in some sort of a skit, in the voice of a character? It certainly makes a difference, don’t you think?"

Would you like to answer it here, or are you going to ignore it again?

  • If we keep electing dirty basterds like Al Franken, we will all be done for!
