Madison Protestors Denounce Libtalk Cancellation

MADISON MOCKERY

Libtalk Cancellation Protest Is Dead On Arrival

*** Update Below ***

The good news was that there was no need for riot police or tear gas.

But with yesterday's poorly attended protest, Madison's radical leftists may actually have sped up their beloved liberal talk radio's demise.

With so few demonstrators to voice rage and anger over the cancellation of so- called "progressive" programming in Wisconsin's capital city, their "mock funeral" succeeded only at making a mockery of political activism.

And it certainly couldn't have done much to convince station managers to refrain from pulling the plug on The Mic FM's lefty talk.

According to an area television station, only about 30 activists took part, but at least they carpooled:

Mock Funeral Procession Mourns Air America
Leaders Say They Will Fight For Liberal Talk Radio

MADISON, Wis. -- Some Air America supporters held a fake funeral procession Wednesday, saying that a Madison radio station pulling the plug on the liberal Air America Radio programming is the "Death of the free speech."

A small group of supporters of the Mic 92.1 FM put signs that read "The death of free speech" on their backpacks, car dashboards, bumpers and windows for the procession.

The fake funeral procession was also marked with black crepe paper, supporters said to indicate a somber occasion as a local station prepares to shut down liberal talk radio in the area.

One driver in the mock processional, Judy Skog, of Madison, said she is devastated by the news that her favorite station is losing the programming she loves.

"I can't stand right-wing talk radio. Other than public radio, this is the only radio I listen to," Skog said.

"I'm just real sorry to see this station go off the air, or essentially go off the air, change its format," said Jeff Lange, of Madison, who attended the mock procession.

With their car radios tuned to 92.1 FM, about 30 people in 15 cars drove with their lights flashing to the source of their disappointment -- the local version of radio giant Clear Channel Radio.

Supporters rolled into the front office parking lot on Wednesday, car after car, carrying one message: Don't dump The Mic's Air America Radio network, hosted by liberals like Al Franken.

They were greeted by Clear Channel FM Operations Manager Mike Ferris. The group presented him with a petition with over 4,500 signatures asking Clear Channel to keep Madison's only liberal talk radio station and not replace it with an all-sports format from Fox Radio.

Clear Channel managers have said in the past that the decision was based on audience research and a lack of advertisers.

"We are hearing your voices, and your voice has been heard. We appreciate you coming out and supporting this," Ferris said as he accepted the petition.

Ferris was cordial but refused further comment. The doors to the offices were locked and a police officer was visible inside, WISC-TV reported.

Here at the Radio Equalizer, we're having a great time chucking over their "free speech" complaint, given that liberals have long called for reinstatement of the FCC's Fairness Doctrine, which would have the effect of shutting down talk radio.

Some believe that Democrats will push for it once they have taken control of Congress in coming weeks.

Also from the left, we often hear about the "public airwaves", with the crazy idea that corporate owners should be compelled to carry leftist radio programming. But at the time of conservative talk radio's initial surge in popularity, the same argument was used in an attempt to force it off the airwaves.

These activists should open up and be honest: if they had a way to kick Rush Limbaugh, Bill O'Reilly, Sean Hannity and others off the radio dial today, they would do it.

In addition, they've had a chance to support liberal talk radio during the almost three years Air America has been on the air, but didn't do nearly enough to make it viable.

As a result, a real funeral should be held, this time to mourn their own faded cause.

  • With a fairness doctrine, the right wings sick ideology would be rejected by not 80% of America (like it is now) it would be rejected by 99.9% of America. The radical right has taken over the media, muzzled the news, talk radio is only a fraction of the problem. Vital stories such as this
    http://www.azstarnet.com/allheadlines/161162
are actually ignored by a complict pro-fascist media. A media that does the bidding of the theives in the White House who desire a country controlled by the largest companies in America. The fascist agenda needs to be exposed on a daily basis. With a fairness doctrine, the radical modern fascists would essentially be deemed powerless by the will of the people.
The radical right fears this. Broadcast media is a disgrace, it boarders on Nazi Germany media. Read "The rise of Fascism" by F. L. Carsten. The parallels of what is happening in America and Italy and Germany in the 1930's is astonishing.
The radical right fights against the same American principles they claim to love. Many of them have been so duped by the complict media, and the radical anti-American freaks on the radio they do not even see what they are doing and supporting. Limbaugh is an enemy of America, Hannity is an enemy of America, the cable news media are enemies of democracy and fascist enablers

  • A matter of timing

IMHO, if reinstatement of the fairness doctrine is delayed until over the air HD radio is common, there won't be a real problem. Talk will not require high fidelity nor stereo, so the broadcasters will be able to continue to broadcast what the populace really wants to hear (the top talkers of today) on the first channel with the fairness doctrine required programming on a second (third/fourth?) channel.

  • >>Limbaugh is an enemy to America

You sound like the right wing parody site Communists for Kerry which had
pics of him, Coulter, Drudge, and
Hannity with Xs across their faces
    and the word "enemy!"

When people like Rush got on the air liberals wanted to KICK HIM OFF
(so much for free speech!) by bringing back the Fairness Doctrine. Which is what they want to do now.
In the free marketplace of ideas,
liberals have every right to run their own shows/network. I have no problem with that. If it thrives,
    so be it.

But poorly done talk radio on weak
signals won't cut it. If station owners felt libtalk would bring in money they'd put it on the big stations, but it's a niche format
at best. Even I will admit some shows like Schultz or Miller may
show promise, but even at their peak of popularity they'd be far behind
    the likes of Limbaugh.

Liberals control most of the media in this country--recently we had
    a prominent newscaster trying to
    bring down a sitting president
with fake documents. I'm not running for anything, Mr. Rather...are you?

  • what the populace really wants to hear

Hardly, with a landslide victory for the 80%ers on November 7th, the populace hardly wants to hear the radical modern fascist agenda. 2% of America listens to radical anti-American talk radio (Limbaugh, Hannity etc etc.) Hardly what the populace wants to hear, this is what the radical Anti-Amriccan "R" over America crowd wants to hear, and this crowd is rapidly shrinking. The media pumps them up simply because they support the anti-American monoploy agenda, of less competition and the sick merger of the media and the goverment, as evidenced by the "right wing talk show" meetings in the Oval office.
With actual fairness in the media, the monopoly driven, kill competition, merge business with government FASCIST RIGHT will have to crawl into an underground bunker and fear an angry America, much like Mussilini, a free society will not tolerate FASCISM

  • Hi kids! I'm back to ponder the whole troll business. I don't read the troll comments as much as wince at them. Where I once thought psychopaths were somewhat entertaining I now look at them as at least potentially dangerous, so they should either be kept on a short leash or kept in jail for the rest of their lives after their first offense. On a larger level society should promote Honorable Suicide for sociopaths who might molest children, bankrupt the elderly or spread the genocidal mental disease of revolutionary Marxism.

The Minister is probably just an angry child while Hash might be one of those vague Lyndon LaDouche followers who live in group homes and collect fake disability claims. Why trolls expend so much effort at a smallish blog is baffling, but cowards with low self-esteem tend to think small. Also, you don’t provide balance to a story by spitting out ten levels of hate.

Robert D. Hare wrote the definitive book on psychopathology, Without Conscience: The Disturbing World Of The Psychopaths Among Us. Trolls should read it to see if maybe they recognize themselves. Trolls are at best creepy and at worst dangerous. They should either calm down, get help or kill themselves before they touch a child inappropriately or something.

PS: Personal hygiene is also important but thankfully it doesn’t apply here. No need to respond directly to me because I have no interest in you beyond pondering your problems in the abstract.

What this does is create cheap labor market and destroys the middle class. 1. Limbaugh is dangerous to the population and his propaganda must be countered by the Fairness Doctrine. This will provide a balance and, thus 're-educated' Americans will move away from support of the right.

This issue that should be discussed in this thread is the fact that even in Madison - a liberal/left-leaning/progressive stronghold they couldn't get more than 30 people who cared about the demise of liberal/left-leaning/progressive radio.

It would probably be less cruel if Air America were to just pull the plug rather than continue to die from this death of a thousand cuts.

As long as maloney attacks A.A (one of the only outlets for real talk) I will defend it, I will not allow a fascist to destroy a truth telling network.
And lokki, you forgot to read the whole thread, Maloney also cried about "fairness doctrine". As far as madison ,the original protest drew a decent amount, who would want to attend a "radio funeral" anyway? Hopefully the listeners will use the products/ services of those that advertise. Pretty funny how those on the right kept saying that it was a failed format, and that people wouldn't miss it. The listeners made their views heard, and Clear Channel responded. Good work by all involved!

  • Lonewatchman...I am not a liberal as much as a leftist, but I do tune in occasionally to neocon radio....however, I really do shut Rush off as soon as I hear his voice, because longsuffering and experience has taught me that there is no "there" there...no substance, no critical analysis, just bloviating and pandering to the lowest common denominator.

Now, I'll listen to Sliwa, even though stupidity is not preferable to Rush's drug-addled rantings, but because Kuby at least provides counterpoint and reason. Batchelor was at one time at least well-informed. Hannity is an unabashed shill for the Bush Crime Family, incapable of critical thought. Levin, Agar, Savage, etc. have allegiances to other entities and simply do not present ideas from a frame of reference that is pro-American or with any moral grounding or fiber.

Lonewatchman, I recognize strongly that these hosts are broadcasting evil, and I believe they are befouling my home and this country.

As much as I may remain curious about the enemy, even from a tactical perspective, how does one even allow their rantings into their personal space?

Neocon radio is fanatical, it is far too radical, even for conservatives, and it has become UNCLEAN.

All I expect of a good commentator is for that person to comment on political happenings, such as the Sunday political shows, As I said, I believe Rush does a very good job of analyzing the statements of the Democrats from the opposing conservative perspective. No "fairness" as such, similar to the opposing counsels in courtrooms.

To be a good politician, I expect the passage of good laws and rejection of bad laws. I think a politician can be good even if he/she does not have an orator's flair for dissecting the opposing party's statements.

  • To top it off the mic, has a 3.5 share in Madison!! Not poor ratings, EXCELLENT RATINGS, around the same numberas WABC in NY.

And here we have definitive proof that MOP knows not a lick about the radio industry. Currently, there are 41 stations registering a rating in the NYC Arbitrons. In Madison, there's only 26 (and a couple of those are bleedover stations from Chicago & Milwaulkee).

In NYC, you can call yourself a success with a 3.5 because there's millions of people in the audience and you're competing with a gazillion stations for those ears. In Madison, where there's fewer choices, a 3.5 just doesn't mean the same thing.

By Blogger BF, at 22 December, 2006 11:03

  • Wrong BF,
30 stations are surveyed in Madison, around 40 are surveyed in NY. Population is much larger in NY, naturally, but the 3.7 (actually) would be considered a success because it places them in the top 10 and there are stations with .4 ratings in the same books. So no matter how you spin int 92.1 the mic is a success ratings wise
    Deal with it

  • MOP: In the words of James T. Kirk, I'm laughing at the superior intellect.

  • Who CARES about the neocon radio industry?

    We care about CONTENT...

    Not drug-addled gibberish.

  • The retards at Moonbattery, in conjunction with the filthy, racist homophobe Zionazi freakazoid and occasional Equalizer poster "V the K", have done another adorable AAR hit piece that calls the network "Al Franken's Air America"...

Can you people BE any more stupid, if you even TRIED??

  • I disagree with MOP constantly, but this time I'm right with him. For the summer 2006 period, a 3.5 rating in Madison, as it turns out, just misses the top 10, which is pretty stellar for AA in any market, really. (I think only Portland has done better.)

  • I don't think the white working-class in Madison has quite the same sense of betrayal by the Democrats that you can feel in Boston....

But that's not what you said. As I recall... "EXCELLENT RATINGS" was the exact phrase I was disagreeing with. Certainly Madison isn't as soul-crushingly awful as it has been for AAR everywhere outside Denver, San Diego, Portland & Seattle, but your post made WXXM's ratings out to be the market's lone juggernaut, which just ain't so.

  • I think all of the emphasis on "profits" and "ratings" is very revealing...

  • Besides, that's what happens when right-wing moneychangers, like the ones at AAR, infiltrate a progressive radio network and deliberately run it into the ground....

I recommend NovaM Radio and the new wave of progressive talk online, like Minister of Propaganda's program.

Also, Randi and Sam continue to put forth high-quality, fact-based political talk.

  • This is a really funny article. Considering that the day after the funeral procession, Clear Channel DID change their minds, evidently our activism did work. And 30 people was an excellent turnout. Clear Channel assigned their station manager to direct the parking since we disrupted business and blocked their front entrance. Regardless of what the conservatives think about our efforts, IT WORKED.
