John DePetro, WRKO, Boston

SUSPENDED

After Slur, WRKO's DePetro Off The Air

*** 3 November 2006: see main page for John DePetro news ***

Tonight your Radio Equalizer is in the odd position of both reporting on an incident involving WRKO / Boston host John DePetro and filling in for him during his two- day suspension.

With that in mind, why don't we leave the rest of it up to the Boston Herald's Jessica Heslam:

Shock jock wannabe John DePetro has been yanked off the air for two days and ordered to apologize for calling embattled Big Dig chief Matt Amorello a “fag” yesterday on his morning radio show.

“This corporation has zero tolerance for racial intolerance. Mr. DePetro has 72 hours to think about it,” said Jason Wolfe, vice president of programming at WRKO (680) and WEEI-AM (850).

DePetro referred to Amorello - who is married to a woman - as “Fag Matt.”

“And I don’t mean gay fag, I just mean the way when you’re a sophomore, juvenile, in grammar school and somebody would say you’re like a sissy boy fag,” DePetro said on-air. “I don’t mean gay fag. I mean like sissy boy. He’s a little sissy boy. Wife wears the pants.”

Amorello, who has faced calls for his resignation since last week’s deadly Big Dig tunnel collapse, declined to comment on DePetro’s remarks.

But the radio host’s comments incensed gay advocates. “It’s extremely offensive. It’s childish. It’s incendiary,” said Emily Pitt, ofFenway Community Health.

“As far as I know, Matt Amorello is not a gay man, but even if he were, it’s just ridiculous,” said Pitt, who didn’t hear DePetro’s show but received e-mails about it.

“It’s pathetic,” added Massachusetts Sen. Jarrett T. Barrios (D-Cambridge), who is openly gay.

Wolfe was program director at WEEI in 2003 when co-hosts John Dennis and Gerry Callahan were suspended for two weeks for comparing an escaped gorilla to an inner-city Metco student.

DePetro, who is suspended and off the air today and tomorrow, did not return a call. It’s unclear whether he will be docked two days’ pay.

With a story by Mark Shanahan, the Boston Globe has also now weighed in:

WRKO host suspended for calling Turnpike chief a derogatory slur

WRKO suspended talk-show host John DePetro today for using a slur for "homosexual" in reference to Turnpike Authority chairman Matthew J. Amorello.

The morning host, who calls himself "The Independent Man," was suspended for two days after using the epithet on the air during a discussion of Amorello's conduct following the ceiling collapse of the I-90 connector. DePetro called Amorello "[expletive] Matt," adding, "I don't mean gay [expletive]. I mean like he's a sissy boy. He's a little sissy boy."

Neither DePetro nor Amorello returned calls late today, but WRKO program director Jason Wolfe said the station has "zero tolerance for racial intolerance... Mr. DePetro has 72 hours to think about this." Wolfe said he purposely chose the word "racial" because "people will lump everything in together."

The conservative talk-show host, who's been on the air at WRKO for three years, made the comment while talking about Amorello's decision to bring his wife, Charlotte, and spokeswoman, Mariellen Burns, to the funeral of Milena Del Valle, the woman who was killed when the ceiling panel collapsed. DePetro said his WRKO colleague Howie Carr calls Amorello "fat Matt" and then said it should "[expletive] Matt."

UPDATE: DePetro returned to WRKO today (Friday) and your Radio Equalizer now resumes regular posting.

FRIDAY: The Herald's update by Jessica Heslam has just been posted. Here's an excerpt:

“On Tuesday, the language that I used was offensive. It was stupid, there was no excuse for it and I apologize,” DePetro said. “There were many, many members of the local and national community who were offended by that language.”

“I apologize to those people. I apoligoze to the management and listeners - you - of WRKO,” he said. “That is not the type of language that should be used on any show and certainly will not be used on my show ever again.”

“We discuss topics very passionately on this show, but we should never allow, and I should never allow, offensive language to enter into our discussion no matter how intense that it gets,” DePetro said.

DePetro was pulled off the air because of his comments Wednesday and yesterday and ordered to apologize.

At least one caller today tried to bring up the incident, telling DePetro he was the “second best” at WRKO-AM (680) and “what they did to you was disgusting.”

DePetro said he appreciated the support but was moving on.

The morning talk jock has not returned calls for comment.

On Tuesday, DePetro called Amorello - who has faced calls for his resignation in the wake of the July 10 deadly tunnel collapse - “Fag Matt.”

“And I don’t mean gay fag, I just mean the way when you’re a sophomore, juvenile, in grammar school and somebody would say you’re like a sissy boy fag,“ DePetro said on the air.

    Get the picture?

  • Irony is that WEEI's Gerry Callahan spent an entire morning "explaining" why "fag" is not an offensive term to use (in reference to Chicago White Sox manager Ozzie Guillen's outburst last month). So what is it Mr. Wolfe?
My two cents: Yes it's offensive, (albeit not "racially" offensive). The suspension is correct, as DePitro's explanation of "sissy boy" instead of "gay" is laughable. Does he not understand why gay men -- many of whom have been picked on since childhood -- would be even further offended by his explanation. Good for WRKO, despite the aforementioned hypocrisy. It's a simple matter of class, decency and respect for one's listeners.

  • DePetro: Italian for "Stupid." When you have to backtrack your comments seconds after uttering them, then it's 99% likely that you screwed the pooch. Maybe he'll be able to get a gig as Opie and Anthony's call screener and try to work his way back up again.

PatWorld - STFU. This issue is not about conservative versus liberal; it is about decent versus indecent. When you come in with that type of stuff, it gives license for others on the board to start spewing.

And that brings us to our daily dose of Two Minutes Hate, cheerfully provided by those intellectual Siamese twins, joined at the brain, HH and RWW. HH serves up the Godwin bait, and RWW tosses out his weekly threats that he can't (or won't) back up. Nice work, gentlemen.

  • RWW - you are the living definition of projection. You have my pity.

HH - My head is still on its neck, attached to the rest of my body, right where it has always been, and will continue to be. And I don't need to throw in additional invective and playground spew to make my point.

The fact that you and RWW do indicates to all here the sickness within yourselves.

If you are so weak in your beliefs that you feel the need to lash out like a pissed-off tween sent early to bed every time you are challenged on something, then I would suggest to you that it is your faith in your ideas that is in question, not the fact that someone should be allowed to disagree with you, even vociferously.

  • Mheh.

By Blogger SierraSpartan, at 19 July, 2006 21:19

  • RWW shrieked as follows: "Seriously, why are you not addressing my point??? Patriotfraud, baslessly attacked people, patriotsfrauds, buddy JD, lied in saying that I was "challanged" on my views by patriotfraud, I was not challanged, he just baslessly attacked everyone who does not "think" like him.

    Can you address my post?
Why do right wingers dodge issues & distort reality on every turn. Can somebody show me where patriotfraud AKA fakepatriotworld "challanged" my viewpoint. Calling "democrats subhuman" is not exactly challanging my view point."

After careful research, I was unable to access a definition to the word 'challange.' However, in checking the thread, I believe the verb used was 'challenge.' So, without further ado...

    From Merriam-Webster: Challenge:
    (1) to demand as due or deserved...
    (2) to order to halt and prove identity...
    (3) to dispute especially as being unjust, invalid, or outmoded...
    (4) to question formally the legality or legal qualifications of...
    (5) to confront or defy boldly... to call out to duel or combat...to invite into competition...

My response to RWW: Perhaps it is because you are unable to separate the general from the particular. Perhaps it is because you insist on seeing that which is not there. I dunno what goes on between your ears, or how you process the pixels you are seeing now.

But have no doubt, what you said to PatWorld was equally, if not more, hateful. My response was an initial challenge of PatWorld for being seriously over the top, and then of you for being even more over the top. PatWorld included liberals in a list of his "subhuman species of slime which come in many forms." Your response was, amongst others, "I do hope, somebody beats the piss out of you. YOU DESERVE A FULL BODY CAST DROP DEAD". If you cannot see the difference between the tone of those sentiments, then you are beyond conversation.

This is an anonymous message forum. PatWorld's threadjacking response - along with yours - revealed no new information, and we are all now less intelligent for having had to plow through them.

I have told you in other threads that as soon as you hit the CapsLock key and start tossing out bodily threats and barnyard language, whatever you may have had to say on the subject will go straight out the window with anyone who may have an open mind on the subject at hand. If the response of Seriouslyunserious to your rant of 7/19 at 16:38 did not drive that concept home, then I do not know what could.

So, I will tell you what I told PatWorld: STFU, at least until such time as you develop the maturity to think before you respond.

  • rightwingwhiner,
Do you see what I mean about quoting others? It took me a few minutes to figure out that your first paragraph you were quoting somebody else. Very bad form. It makes for hard reading. Remember, we're trying to communicate here, not brow beat our reader into begrudgingly read a rant.

Also, take a little time on that new blog of yours and figure out how to place links in the comments. This too makes it much easier for your reader to quickly move to the site of interest. Remember, you want to encourage people to your point of view and these little courtesies go a long way.

By the way, I stopped by your website for a quick look. I don't suppose I have to tell you it won't be added to my favorites, although your post about going to the minor league baseball game was interesting. I'm a fan of the rookie league team in my home town, lots of fun and a great value.

Now, if you've made it this far you might take note that it doesn't really matter "who started it" as far as your little blog skirmish goes. That type of argument gets all the children sent to their rooms. Taking responsibility for one's own filth is a first step in the road to sanity. I'm never sure why liberals always cry when certain commenters aren't banned. People can call me all kinds of vial names but it doesn't really upset me because I know better. For somebody to be able to push your buttons and get that reaction indicates to me that you're not secure in your beliefs. For instance, you used the word "gay" indicating it is a bad thing, and I don't think that it is a bad thing to be gay. People can call me "gay" all day long, and it doesn't effect me, because I'm secure in my sexuality. Why would you assume that "being gay" is an insult?
